Statutory training is fundamental to any business. Where a statutory body has dictated that an organisation must provide training based on legislation. The purpose of statutory training is to ensure that statutory training helps employees maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
Examples of statutory training
Statutory training is required by law or a statutory body, such as the Care Quality Commission, and has instructed the organisation to carry the training to meet legislative requirements.
For example
- Fire Safety training is required by statute: Management of Health and Safety at
Work Regulations 1997, amended 1999
- Race related training is required under the Race Relations Amendments Act
(2000) as interpreted by the Commission for Racial Equality
Mandatory training
Mandatory training differs from statutory training as it is usually made compulsory by the organisation to ensure their employees are competent to reduce risks, follow guidelines and comply with their policies. Employees undertake this training with the purpose of minimising risk, providing assurance against policies and to meet external standards which will ensure that:-
- Staff are able to carry out duties safely and efficiently
- To protect staff, patients and the public from harm
- To maintain competence to the required standard e.g. Care Quality Standards
Some mandatory training is specific to particular groups and disciplines, and may be determined by Trust policy, government regulation and professional regulation instruction and guidelines.
Getting your staff trained
Training is not just about staying compliant, it’s about ensuring your people can safely and confidently do a great job and support those they serve.
The problem is, trying to get people engaged with (or even turn up for) mandatory training is a challenge when many courses are too broad and, dare we say it – too boring.
That’s frustrating. Especially when some of the skills your people need training in could, ultimately, save lives. Worrying about what could go wrong if your teams aren’t getting the required learning is enough to keep you awake at night!
But, it doesn’t have to be that way.
We’ve helped organisations like yours increase training attendance from 60% to as high as 90% in just 3 months.
