Do you train your staff? If not, it may be time to revise your business plan.
As a business, your staff are the pillars that make it work and without them, the business will more than likely fail. Well-trained employees are essential to any business and when they have the right training, skills, and knowledge, your business will run smoothly and reap the rewards.
Why is it important to train your staff?
Trained employees are essential to any business, not only will your staff perform their jobs with greater competency, but they will also better serve their customers with fewer mistakes and greater outcomes. If you already train your staff, you’ll know how important it is and how rewarding it is for your business, if you don’t, here are some employee training tips to help you get started.
Create a plan
Before beginning to train your staff, you will need to create an employee training program. But to do this, you will first need to determine what training your employees need. To figure this out, first, write a list of all mandatory training you need within a business, this is the training- by law- you can’t do without. Secondly, write a list of what skills and knowledge your employees need to successfully do their job.
Once you have a list, structure it so the training program begins with the simplest, foundational information, then lead up to the more advanced training. Next, look at training gaps, if employees lack in certain areas, training will help fill these gaps, for example, if your employees struggle with computers or technology, then you may want to look at getting them trained in these areas to reduce the amount of time they spend on these areas and to make sure they’re best performing in these areas.
Next, envision where you’d like your business to be in 5 years, then work out what training your staff will need to get there. Future planning for your business allows you to make a long-term plan that you work backwards on to ensure the results.
Get a good training provider
For mandatory training and additional training, make sure you get the best possible training providers. You may ask- but how different can they be? The answer is, very! Have you ever been in mandatory training and felt your eyes drooping and barely heard a word the trainer said? If the answer is yes, then that’s because their training is poor and pointless if your staff can’t engage with it. For training like first aid training, having staff not engaged in the training could literally be life and death, if they don’t remember the training necessary when the moment comes because they didn’t pay attention, it could be problematic.

Cross-train staff
Although staff have certain roles, cross-training can help- particularly when there is staff training. Cross-training can help employees better do their primary jobs. They might gain skills that they can apply to their tasks. And they better know what to expect from co-workers in other positions and have more understanding about the different positions other staff members do.
Measure the results
You must determine if your training program is working. To do this, set goals and track whether or not they’re being met. As you set goals, think about who you want to reach the goals. You can set goals for the whole company, a department, or individuals. Measuring the results will help you see if there are any skill gaps within the business and help you tweak or change the training plan to fix the issue.
